Click one of the following links to see the details of each section of the plan: Crime Education Reform Economic Development Good Government Reform Judicial Reform Coastal Restoration JUDICIAL REFORM As a personal injury defense attorney, I am very familiar with the dysfunctional judicial system which has been highlighted for the public by recent scandals involving area judges. While there are many good judges, the current system does not insure competence by judicial candidates and it challenges the ethics of those elected by allowing $5000 campaign contributions for which “special consideration” is expected. The abuses are greater than the public is aware, and we desperately need to fix the system so that our judiciary is respected, rather than ridiculed. We need to create a judicial system based on reason and competence and not greed and power politics. In the Legislature I will use my legal experience to pass laws which will: 1. Establish higher requirements for judicial candidates including a minimum of 10 years experience instead of the current 5 year requiremen 2. Establish a $500 limit per person for campaign contributions to judges. The public has little faith in the impartiality of judges now because of the enormous amounts of money contributed to judges by attorneys and others. This law will go a long way to restoring the public trust. 3. Work with the Chamber of Commerce and members of the plaintiff and defense attorneys associations to create a merit selection system that is fair and inclusive and which will produce competent and ethical judges. 4. Authorize the Louisiana Attorney General to initiate prosecutions against attorneys, doctors, and others engaging in insurance fraud, since local District Attorneys tend not to pursue such claims. 5. Require judges to report to the District Attorney and the Louisiana Attorney General all evidence of insurance and Medicaid fraud, since many judges routinely do not report such fraud which simply encourages others to also break the law. 6. Require judges to report to the District Attorney all evidence of perjury, since many judges routinely do not report perjury, which encourages others to also lie.
