Unfortunately, for too long our elected officials have used their position and influence to gain contracts or jobs with the state. We must stop this sophisticated form of corruption rooted in an inherent conflict of interest. As your State Representative, I will advocate tougher ethics initiatives, including the introduction of legislation to: 1. Eliminate Legislative Slush Funds. Over $30 million of your tax payer dollars are presently spent by Legislators through the slush funds without any oversight, accountability, or auditing. It is a corrupt system that should be eliminated. 2. Prohibit any state official from receiving any campaign contribution or gift from any business which is regulated by that official. 3. Require an annual comprehensive audit of the finances of the Orleans Parish School Board. 4. Prohibit legislators from accepting any gifts or campaign donations from lobbyists. 5. Enlarge the staff of the Legislative Auditor and the Ethics Office so that they can expand their investigations of corruption.
