Click one of the following links to see the details of each section of the plan: Crime Education Reform Economic Development Good Government Reform Judicial Reform Coastal Restoration EDUCATION REFORM LEAP test results show that almost all of the schools in New Orleans are failing, thereby proving that our present public school system is unacceptable. Some of Superintendent Amato’s reforms are starting to take hold, despite the foot dragging by a majority of the school board. However, more assertive reforms are needed. I have worked with parent groups and others to attempt reforms in the past, so I am no newcomer to the efforts to improve education. As a result, I believe that the Orleans Parish School Board is part of the problem, and its improvement is critical to the success of our schools. If elected I will work to: 1. OVERHAUL THE SCHOOL BOARD --- I will introduce legislation to enlarge the Board to add 4 new members who will be appointed by the Presidents of the 6 Universities in town. These 4 appointed members can then join with the reformers on the board to form a majority which will help Superintendent Amato to dramatically improve New Orleans Public Schools. 2. SUPPORT THE SUPERINTENDENT --- I fully support Superintendent Amato’s proposed reforms, including establishing signature schools and strengthening magnet schools. 3. KEEP LEAP TESTING --- I fully support LEAP testing and will fight any attempts to return to the old social promotion system that delivered only illusions to our children. 4. INCREASE TEACHER PAY --- I believe that it is necessary that we not only increase teacher pay to the Southern average, but that we reward good teachers with performance bonuses. 5. ENFORCE DISCIPLINE --- I believe that Principals should be given greater flexibility in maintaining discipline at their schools, and that disruptive students who interfere with teaching and learning should be transferred to alternative schools, where they will benefit from greater structure in their lives. 6. CONTROL FINANCES --- I will introduce legislation to require an annual, independent, and comprehensive audit of the School Board’s finances and work with local law enforcement to make sure that those who walked away with $27 million of your money go to prison.
